Free Means Zero Dollars In My World

Even though this post should be located at Sam’s Other Stories I decided it would live here instead. There are two reasons for that: 1) Everyone should get to laugh at my ex-husband with me, not just the ones reading my private blog. 2) If my ex-husband is reading this I’d like him to know I’m laughing at him. One thing about the private blog you should know: I am not dumb enough to believe my ex-husband will not be able to find a way to read it. While I am more open there, I will not be saying anything (hopefully) that will result in unwanted fucking of my ass.

Chicken has worn prescription glasses for twelve(ish) years. In the past the way I’ve worked glasses with his father is I pay for glasses, he pays for the airfare each year. My ex-husband has complained about this practice many times. “If you weren’t such a lazy dumb cunt (paraphrasing) you would get his eye exam and glasses on base and they would be free. Then you would have to pay half of the plane ticket, thus making my life easier.”

I complained about it in 2010 but I haven’t been able to find a post regarding the one time my ex-husband “purchased glasses” for Chicken. The short story:

  • Only the lenses were replaced
  • The frames were about five minutes from disintegrating
  • I was sent a pair of blanks for my eye doctor to grind
  • The frames fell apart
  • Lenscrafters wouldn’t take the liability of lenses from who the fuck knows where
  • I paid for lenses and frames myself

This summer I emailed my ex-husband about the glasses situation:

Ex-husband,

Chicken’s glasses frames got cracked in the psych facility. You have mentioned that prices for exams and new glasses are much cheaper on base. I will be replacing his glasses (lens and frame) when the frame breaks or in January, whichever comes first.

If you would like to take care of this while you have him there for a month instead you can. Otherwise I will do it. If I do it you will be responsible for half the cost.

Just replacing the lenses (as you did last time) will not work. The frames are cracked.

Thank you,

Sam

Chicken’s frames broke. My ex-husband wanted me to fax the prescription to him. I gave him the name of the eye doctor and the city. If you can handle ALL the medical care for Chicken, I’m betting you can make one phone call and get a prescription faxed to you. I guess he didn’t feel like getting Chicken’s eyes examined for free? Chicken picked out new glasses and is waiting for them to be made. The glasses were $371.00 according to Chicken. He’s happy with the new frames, and that is about how much I spend on glasses each year.

I don’t know what part of the country you’re from, but in California free =/= $371.00.

I’m trying to remember back in the Dark Ages (when I was a teenager); I switched to contacts when I was 15 & had the Lasix surgery as soon as I could afford it as a young adult (28 or so)… but I remember my eyeglasses being hellaciously expensive (esp considering inflation etc) – well over $200 in the late ’70′s!!! (all of which was paid out-of-pocket by my long-suffering parents)

So yes indeed, $371 sounds like a true bargain. Hope the summer visit went well in all other regards for Chicken also!

Eyeglass coverage is the most confusing shit on earth, but $371 sounds about average. So, I guess it’s been a learning experience for the ex… Maybe he’ll learn to stop talking out his ass – there is nothing free in eyecare.
